WiMAX is a high-speed, broadband wireless digital telecommunications system intended for large coverage areas. Fixed station access can extend up to 30 miles (50 km) while mobile stations range from 3–10 miles (5–15 km). WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16* standard for wireless metropolitan area networks (WMANs).
