Avoid walking around Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and other main towns and cities in mainland Honduras. Be particularly careful at bus stations, airports, isolated beaches, tourist sites and on public transport. Keep your valuables locked away in a safe if possible.

Tegucigalpa is currently the city of greatest buoyancy in the country, given that it is the political and administrative center. The city's historic center features churches from the colonial era and emblematic buildings which construction dates back to the beginning of the 20th century.

Tegucigalpa has been the capital of Honduras since 1880. It is situated on hilly land surrounded by mountains. The city's name comes from the Nahuatl language, and means “silver mountain,” an indication of the rich resources awaiting colonial settlers who founded the city as a mining center for silver and gold in 1578.

As for Honduras, conflict didn't cause a shift in the capital region; it was a matter of logistics. In 1936, a new constitution was being established. Officials opted to have a Central District comprised of two cities: Tegucigalpa and Comayaguela.
