Matlock is nice, maybe not quite as nice as some other little towns in the Peak District (such as Bakewell). For walking however, it is a great location. Try to go to Chatsworth House, you can either walk in the gardens (they are fantastic and you can easily walk several miles) or on the grounds.
Which is better, Matlock or Matlock Bath?
Both have some nice accommodation but maybe Matlock Town is more convenient for the bus connections to the some of the places we want to visit. On the other hand there are many other attractions in Matlock Bath including the illuminations on that weekend, and more convenient for evening entertaining.
