Fantasy films are films that belong to the fantasy genre with fantastic themes, usually magic, supernatural events, mythology, folklore, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre is considered a form of speculative fiction alongside science fiction films and horror films, although the genres do overlap.

The earliest fantasy movie is likely Alice Guy's “The Cabbage Fairy,” filmed in 1896.

A type of adventure film where the action takes place in imaginary lands with strange beasts, wizards and witches. These films contain many of the elements of the sword-and-sorcery film, but are not necessarily bound to the conventions of the sword and magic.

Fantasy films represent hopes and desires for better or alternative worlds, and through the technical developments required to portray those worlds, they have contributed significantly to the development of cinema and how we experience it.
