Ivanishvili spent his formative years in Russia where he built his fortune like other oligarchs who acquired Soviet-era state assets through privatisations. While studying at a Moscow university in the 1980s, he teamed up with a Russian-Israeli national, Vitaly Malkin, and began trading in computers and telephones from Hong Kong.
Ivanishvili is widely believed to pull strings in government despite having had no formal position since resigning as prime minister in 2013. In his speech on Saturday, he said he was in regular contact with Georgia's leadership and suggested he would take an active role in the election campaign as honorary chair of Georgian Dream.
Ivanishvili and his Georgian Dream party are trying to push through parliament a new law that has caused the biggest unrest in Georgia in years. The 'foreign agent' bill, as it's known, would give the government more control over the media and human rights organisations.
There is no doubt among Georgia’s political elite that Mr Ivanishvili, 68, who only returned to the fold as “honorary chairman” of his party in December, is behind the new law. “Everyone knows that Ivanashvili pulls the strings,” said Tina Bokuchava, chair of the UNM opposition party, which is preparing for an October election.
