Alzheimer’s disease typically progresses slowly in three stages: early, middle and late (sometimes referred to as mild, moderate and severe in a medical context). Since Alzheimer’s affects people in different ways, each person may experience dementia symptoms — or progress through the stages — differently.
This guideline is used by professionals and caregivers around the world to identify at what stage of the disease a person is in. Stages 1-3 are the pre-dementia stages; stages 4-7 are the dementia stages. Stage 5 is the point where a person can no longer live without assistance.
Two commonly used models of Alzheimer’s progression are the 7-stage model and 3-stage model. Either of them can offer useful roadmaps for both people with the disease and their caregivers. BetterHelp is an online therapy service that matches you to licensed, accredited therapists who can help with depression, anxiety, relationships, and more.
Sample 7-stage model of Alzheimer’s disease: Memory and cognitive abilities appear normal. Memory lapses and changes in thinking are rarely detected by friends, family, or medical personnel. While subtle difficulties begin to impact function, the person may try to cover up their problems.
