Horlivka's economy was based on the extraction and the processing of its mineral resources. Of Horlivka's nine anthracite mines, several were among the largest in the Donets Basin: the Lenin, Kindrativka-Nova, Kocheharka (after its expansion in 1933), Komsomolets, and Gagarin mines.
