The Marines often operate as a quick-reaction force. Although the Navy controls the seas, the Marine Corps is more shore-oriented. Their speciality is amphibious operations, i.e., controlling the attacks undertaken from the sea by naval forces. Marine Corps units are ready to be the first on the ground in a conflict.
