Esbjerg, city, southwestern Jutland, Denmark, opposite Fanø island on the North Sea. Founded in 1868, after the loss of North Slesvig (Schleswig) to Germany, to provide a new export outlet for Jutland's agricultural produce, it grew rapidly after the harbour was completed in 1874 and was chartered in 1899.
