It was founded in 1823 by Garifuna refugees from Honduras (descendants of Carib Indians and Africans exiled from British colonies in the eastern Caribbean in the 18th century). Dangriga developed as a port and trading centre for bananas, timber, coconuts, and fish. It has a plant for canning and freezing orange juice.
