It is a resort and a shipping point for bananas, coffee, allspice (pimento), ginger, coconuts, copra, honey, and rum. Many of the early public buildings, including the Morant Bay Courthouse, were burned in the riots of 1865, during which the chief magistrate of the parish and 18 other Europeans were killed.
