He graduated from the Military Academy in 1877 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Sixth Cavalry. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 3 January 1885. His first nine years of service were spent in Arizona and New Mexico during which time he commanded a unit of Indian Scouts.
