Gore Bay was originally included with Gordon Township when Manitoulin Island was first surveyed in 1875. In 1889 Gore Bay became the judicial capital of Manitoulin Island. At that time the district courthouse, jail and registry office were built. The courthouse and registry office still exist in the same location.
