    Originally established in 1754 under the name Ayr Hill (later known as Phelps in the 1850s), Vienna’s first settler was a prominent soldier and land owner by the name of Colonel Charles Broadwater.     Vienna ( / viˈɛnə /) is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 U.S. census, Vienna has a population of 16,473.
    The history of the area, most of which is just outside the Town of Vienna, is unsurprisingly tied to the history of Vienna itself. Thus the research and subject matter often strayed across the Town line. Until 2022, I had posted my articles on Next Door, but as the Next Door website evolved, it became less suitable for my purposes.
    The railroad reached Vienna in 1859 and provided the impetus for growth into a real village. When the Civil War began, Vienna became a camping ground for the two contending forces—switching hands several times. This was a confusing time for residents.
