At the beginning of the 14th century, the Principality of Opava was formed with Opava later becoming its administrative centre. In 1742, after the First Silesian War when most of Silesia was annexed to Prussia, Opava became the capital of Austrian Silesia.
It has about 56,000 inhabitants. It lies on the Opava River. Opava is one of the historical centres of Silesia. It was a historical capital of Czech Silesia.
