Founded in 1192 with the ransom of Richard the Lionheart by the Babenbergs, Wiener Neustadt experienced its heyday under the Habsburgs in the 15th century when Emperor Frederick III. chosen it as the imperial residence. His son Maximilian I was born and baptized in Wiener Neustadt Castle in 1459.
