Baroque style arrangements began as symmetrical, oval-shaped de- signs. They were characterized by heavy ornamentation that in- cluded cherubs and scrolls. Later in this period, floral design styles became asymmetrical and featured a sweeping “S” curve.

Floral design shapes of this period were often triangles, arcs, and ellipses utilizing roses, lilies, daisies, violets, laurel dianthus, olive branches, and ivy branches to create the shape.

Often, particular arrangements were created to honour a god or hero. Classical Greek arrangements include flowers like hyacinths, honeysuckle, roses, lilies, tulips, larkspur and marigolds. Herbs that were frequently included were rosemary, flowering basil and thyme.

Flower arrangements have been a part of human culture since ancient times. The Egyptians, for example, used flowers in religious ceremonies, as well as for decorative purposes in their homes and public spaces. They favored symmetrical designs and often used lotus flowers, roses, and lilies in their arrangements.
