      1-2b History of the Town In December of 1734, Thomas J. Scharf’s “History of Delaware” states that Hartly is located three miles north of Marydel on a tract of land that was called “Proctors Purchase.”
      Hartly is a town in Kent County, Delaware, United States. It is part of the Dover, Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 73 in 2020, making it the least populous municipality in Delaware. Hartly is located at 39°10′07″N 75°42′48″W.
      Hartly is one of Delaware’s most closely knit communities, with a history that stretches to as far back as 1734 (back when the town was nicknamed “Butterpot”). Several residents of Hartly are actually direct descendants to the area’s first settlers.
      The village was re-named Hartly for a Mr. Hart, a railroad employee, who was instrumental in bringing the railroad to the area. The rail line was laid in the 1850s with the first depot located a half mile south of Hartly at Slaughter Station. By 1882, Hartly seemed more likely to develop into a Town.
