  1. Slightly smaller than Earth's Moon, Europa is made of silicate rock and has a water-ice crust and probably an iron–nickel core. It has a very thin atmosphere, composed primarily of oxygen. Its white- beige surface is striated by light tan cracks and streaks, but craters are relatively few.

Europa is a large moon of the planet Jupiter. It is a little smaller than Earth's Moon and it is the sixth-largest moon in the Solar System. Europa's diameter is about 3000 kilometers. It probably has an iron core, and a thin of mostly oxygen. The surface is icy and very smooth. There are not a lot of craters, but there are some cracks and lines.

Europa is a little smaller than Earth’s moon, and it is the sixth largest moon in our solar system. Europa has a diameter of 3,100 kilometers. Europa is the sixth closest moon to Jupiter, though Io is the only large moon closer in. Europa orbits Jupiter roughly every 3.5 days. Its orbit has an average radius of 671,000 kilometers.

A prominent feature of Europa is its high degree of reflectivity. Europa's icy crust gives it an albedo — light reflectivity — of 0.64, one of the highest of all of the moons in the entire solar system. Scientists estimate that Europa's surface is about 20 million to 180 million years old, which makes it fairly young.
Europa is one of the Galilean moons of Jupiter, along with Io, Ganymede and Callisto. Astronomer Galileo Galilei gets the credit for discovering these Galilean moons, among the largest in the solar system. Europa is the smallest of the four but it is one of the more intriguing satellites.
Images from the two Voyagers revealed a surface brighter than that of Earth's moon, crisscrossed with numerous bands and ridges, and with a surprising lack of large impact craters, tall cliffs, or mountains. In other words, Europa has a very smooth surface, relative to the other icy moons.
Europa is also one of several moons in our solar system with very large quantities of ice (volatiles), otherwise known as "icy moons." Magnetic field around Europa. The red line shows a trajectory of the Galileo spacecraft during a typical flyby (E4 or E14).
