A marvel of medieval devotional art and calligraphy, the Book of Kells is a hand-printed copy of the New Testament. Experts believe that three different artists illustrated the pages, and three or four scribes copied the text. Each of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are prefaced by texts like summaries, indexes, and commentary.

The Board of Trinity College Dublin Gospel of Matthew 23. 22-26 <p>The Book of Kells is widely regarded as Ireland's greatest historical treasure, and is one of the most spectacular examples of medieval Christian art in the world. Its fame rests principally on the impact of its lavish decoration, the extent and artistry of which are incomparable.
The completed work was published in 1990 in a two-volume set containing the full facsimile and scholarly commentary. One copy is held by the Anglican Church in Kells, on the site of the original monastery. The ill-fated Celtworld heritage centre, which opened in Tramore, County Waterford in 1992, included a replica of the Book of Kells.
The book is written on vellum (prepared calfskin) in a bold and expert version of the script known as "insular majuscule". It contains 340 folios, now measuring approximately 330 x 255 mm; they were severely trimmed, and their edges gilded, in the course of rebinding in the 19th century. Where and when was the Book of Kells written?
The Book of Kells contains the text of the four Gospels based on the Vulgate. It does not, however, contain a pure copy of the Vulgate. There are numerous differences from the Vulgate, where Old Latin translations are used in lieu of Jerome's text.
