Hafez of Shiraz (also given as Hafiz, l. 1315-1390) is considered the greatest of the Persian poets and among the most famous and admired writers in world literature. He is among the most often translated poets in the present day and his work continues to resonate with modern audiences.
One of the distinguishing features of Hafez Shirazi’s poetry is his effective use of symbolism and imagery. He often employs metaphors and allegories to convey deeper meanings. Wine, nightingales, roses, and the beloved figure are some of the recurring symbols in his poetry.
Hafez was falling out of favor with Shah Shoja. He fled Shiraz for his safety, and went into self-imposed exile in Esfahan. His poems mainly talk of his longing for Shiraz, for Shakh-e Nabat, and for his spiritual Master, Attar. Some years later by invitation of Shah Shoja, he ended his exile and returned to Shiraz.
Hafez Shirazi is widely celebrated in Iran and beyond through festivals and commemorations. In Iran, his birthday is commemorated as a national holiday, known as “Hafez Day.” On this day, people gather at his tomb in Shiraz to recite his poetry, pay homage to his legacy, and celebrate his contribution to Persian culture.
