While Leon is not among the most dangerous municipalities in Guanajuato such as Celaya, Salamanca, and Guanajuato City, it does suffer from frequent shootings. At least 20 people have been shot and killed in Leon since the start of the year, primarily in violence waged between rival street gangs.
