Fort Campbell's name will not change. Its name comes from the other side of the Civil War: Union Army Brig. Gen. William Bowen Campbell.

The 101st Airborne is an elite division of light infantry in the United States Army that specializes in air assault operations. With three brigade combat teams, the 101st Airborne is capable of simultaneously deploying multiple units to austere environments behind enemy lines.

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is the only air assault division of the United States Army. Nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles,” the 101st has consistently distinguished itself by demonstrating the highest standards of military professionalism since its activation at one minute after midnight, Aug. 16, 1942.

Due to its close proximity to Nashville, the War Department on March 7, 1941, designated Tennessee as the official address of the new camp. This caused a great deal of confusion. While the headquarters and a great majority of the base's acreage was in Tennessee, the base's post office was in Kentucky.
