British intelligence called Juan Pujiol Garcia 'Agent Garbo' because he was so good at assuming new identities. Updated: August 29, 2018 | Original: June 1, 2018 After World War II, a critical MI5 spy named Juan Pujol Garcia faked his own death, and kept it secret for almost four decades. And that’s not even the most interesting thing about him.
Juan Pujol García MBE , also known as Joan Pujol i García , was a Spanish spy who acted as a double agent loyal to Great Britain against Nazi Germany during World War II, when he relocated to Britain to carry out fictitious spying activities for the Germans.
Unfortunately, although perhaps unsurprisingly, the British embassy officials in Lisbon and Madrid were less than impressed when he approached them unheralded and offered his services as a spy. It fell to Aracelli to establish the connections which would turn Garbo from being one man’s dream into one of the most successful spies of the war.
Garbo, unlike virtually all other Double Cross agents, was not originally a German spy. Instead he started out on his own, working in Lisbon, feeding the Germans information he made up from the few maps and guide books he had available. Garbo’s wife, Araceli, played a vital role in the setting up of this deception.
