The province is bordered by Central Sulawesi and West Sulawesi to the north, the Gulf of Bone and Southeast Sulawesi to the east, Makassar Strait to the west, and Flores Sea to the south.
    South Sulawesi province comprises the narrow southwestern peninsula of this orchid-shaped island, which is mainly mountainous. The seafaring Bugis dominant the southern tip, whereas the northern part of South Sulawesi is inhabited by the Torajas whose unique culture rivals that of the Balinese.
    It is bounded by the provinces of Central Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tengah) to the north, Southeast Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tenggara) to the northeast, as well as by the Gulf of Bone to the east, the Flores Sea to the south, the Makassar Strait to the southwest, and the province of West Sulawesi (Sulawesi Barat) to the northwest.
    The 2010 census estimated the population as 8,032,551, which makes South Sulawesi the most populous province on the island (46% of the population of Sulawesi is in South Sulawesi), and the sixth most populous province in Indonesia.
