The longsword is characterized not so much by a longer blade, but by a longer grip, which indicates a weapon designed for two-handed use. Swords with exceptionally long hilts are found throughout the High Middle Ages.

The maximum length for longswords was generally limited by what could be drawn from a scabbard. Its blade length may range from 83 to 101 centimeters, while its hilt measures about 17 to 25 centimeters long. Most medieval longswords were reasonably light, weighing around 3 to 4 pounds.
Most longsword dimensions range between 116 and 150cm, with the blade length measuring between 100 to 122cm. These are the perfect melee weapons thanks to their reach and lighter weight. We’ve already mentioned that longswords had both a straight and double-edged blade, but over time, they became longer and thicker in the cross-section.
As for how long is a longsword blade, these weapons had blades around 34-39” in length. This illustration from the margin of the Alphonso Psalter (late 13th century) shows a knight wielding a hand-and-a-half sword with a two-handed grip, with their shield slung over their shoulder by its guige strap.
