    Each U.S. state has its own capital city, as do many of its insular areas. Most states have not changed their capital city since becoming a state, but the capital cities of their respective preceding colonies, territories, kingdoms, and republics typically changed multiple times.
    However, a capital is not always the largest city in a country. For example, the capital of India is New Delhi, which is smaller than Mumbai. In countries with subdivisions like the United States, the capitals of the federated states are often not the biggest cities.
    Article One, Section Eight of the U.S. Constitution permits the establishment of a "District (not exceeding ten miles square) as may, by cession of particular states, and the acceptance of Congress, become the seat of the government of the United States". However, the constitution does not specify a location for the capital.
