The settlement developed around a Franciscan monastery that was founded in 1537. The Piranda were already established in the region. Morelia was officially founded as “Valladolid” by the Viceroy of New Spain, with the authorisation of King Philip II (1556-1598). Valladolid attained the status of a city in 1547.
