Geography. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 590 square miles (1,500 km2), of which 589 square miles (1,530 km2) is land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) (0.1%) is water. The county has the unusual distinction of forming a perfect square by Mercator map projection.
