But Windows 95 was not a pure "32-bit" OS: It was still based around the framework of Windows 3.x, 2.x and 1.x. It still ran on top of DOS, but bundled its own special "Windows 95" DOS (AKA MS-DOS 7). It could even still make use of DOS drivers. The 95 architecture was continued with Windows 98. Most 95 CDs are NOT BOOTABLE.
It handled not only windows full of icons representing both files and applications, but also the Start menu and taskbar. Other Windows 95 software innovations included: A right-click context menu for direct file operations. A desktop area that could store files like a folder. File shortcuts. The Recycle Bin. "My Computer" on the desktop.
Microsoft added a lot of features to Windows 95, but the biggest was a new Start button, menu, and task bar that made it a lot easier to discover applications and navigate the operating system.
Microsoft's Windows 95 was a huge leap from Windows 3.1. It was the first release of Windows with the Start menu, taskbar, and typical Windows desktop interface we still use today. Windows 95 won't work on modern PC hardware, but you can still install it in a virtual machine and relive those glory days.
