The name prairie rose is also sometimes applied to Rosa blanda, also known as the meadow rose or smooth rose, which is also widely spread, but somewhat further to the north. Wild rose is the state flower of the U.S. states of Iowa and North Dakota.
The central flower opens first, containing no bract and a pedicel 2–4 cm (0.79–1.57 in) long (shorter and stouter than those of other prairie rose species). The five large petals are shaped either obovate or obcordate, 3 cm (1.2 in) long and 2.5 cm (0.98 in) wide.

As the name suggests, prairie rose is a species of open lands occurring in and at the edge of prairies, woodlands and savannas, and in fencerows and thickets. It is sometimes found at the edge of forests. It is found from New York and New Hampshire south to Florida, west to Texas, north to Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ontario.
Indigenous tribes across North America have historically utilized various parts of the Wild Prairie Rose for medicinal purposes. The petals, roots, and hips were often employed to create herbal remedies for a range of ailments.
