Pioneer 11 (also known as Pioneer G) is a NASA robotic space probe launched on April 5, 1973, to study the asteroid belt, the environment around Jupiter and Saturn, the solar wind, and cosmic rays. It was the first probe to encounter Saturn, the second to fly through the asteroid belt, and the second to fly by Jupiter.

Pioneer 11 successfully completed its crossing of the asteroid belt in April 1974. Pioneer 11 began its observations of Jupiter in November and made its closest approach to the giant planet’s cloud tops on December 2 at a distance of only 26,612 miles and a speed of 107,400 miles per hour.
It was the first probe to encounter Saturn, the second to fly through the asteroid belt, and the second to fly by Jupiter. Later, Pioneer 11 became the second of five artificial objects to achieve an escape velocity allowing it to leave the Solar System.

It would use Jupiter's gravity to slingshot the spacecraft toward Saturn, which would be a great preparation for future missions to the outer planets such as the Voyagers (then in the planning stages.) Pioneer 11 launched April 5, 1973, on an Atlas-Centaur rocket and cruised easily out of Earth orbit towards Jupiter.
