The Otaru Snow Light Path Festival, held each year throughout the second week of February, takes place in two main areas of Otaru. The Unga Kaijo area is the more famous of the two, as it is located alongside the Otaru Canal with its historic, restored warehouses.
The canal and the Former Temiya Railway are the primary snow light paths, but this is a community festival, and lights can be seen all over the area. The area can be accessed by train. Take a 30- to 35-minute rapid train from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station and then walk about eight to 10 minutes to get to the Otaru Snow Light Path area.
For about ten days in the beginning of February, Otaru's downtown is lit up with numerous small lanterns covered in snow and ice, creating a magical path to a leisurely walk. How to go to Yuki Akari no Michi?
Many shops, restaurants and other tourist spots also have unique snow sculptures in front of their buildings to lure in customers. It’s probably impossible to visit Otaru during the festival without running into some weird snow sculptures. Some buildings also are lit up.
