Archaean granite and greenstone rock assemblages form the central area of the country, the Tanzania Craton, which is surrounded by Proterozoic belts: the Palaeoproterozoic Usagaran–Ubendian Belt and the Mesoproterozoic Kibaran Belt. The Neoproterozoic Mozambique Belt occurs in the eastern part of the country.
