First settled in the 13th century, Sopot was annexed in 1807 to the free city of Gdańsk (under Prussian control as Danzig) by Napoleon; it received municipal rights in 1901. It was again incorporated into Gdańsk (under Polish control) in 1919–39. Following Nazi occupation in World War II, it regained its independence.
