While Grindelwald and Voldemort were both feared dark wizards, they definitely had nothing to do with each other until much later in the series. Aside from the obvious fact that Grindelwald came much earlier than Voldemort, Grindelwald was more of a European/American dark wizard.

It was in Godric's Hollow in the summer of 1899 that Grindelwald met and befriended Albus Dumbledore. The two teenagers had a lot in common: they were intellectuals and talented young wizards, who were also idealistic and ambitious. The pair even became lovers during the two months that they knew one another.

Fifty-three years after his defeat, Grindelwald was slain in his prison cell by Lord Voldemort, who was searching for the Elder Wand for himself. It was only during the confrontation in Grindelwald's cell that Voldemort learned Albus Dumbledore had claimed the wand long ago.
