    Tinian was administered by Japan before World War II and became a major sugarcane-growing and sugar-processing centre. After its capture by U.S.-led Allied forces in 1944, the island was converted into a major U.S. military air base, equipped with what were then the world’s longest runways.
    The island has a land area of 39 sq mi (101.01 km²). Tinian is the least populated of the three main Mariana Islands that constitute the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands. The island has a strong historical legacy remaining from the Pacific war of the 1940s.
