En esta ciudad entró Simón Bolívar el 1 de marzo de 1813 al haber culminado la Batalla de Cúcuta, la cual dio inicio a la Campaña Admirable. Esto hecho convirtió al municipio en el primero en respirar la libertad de la opresión que se vivía por parte del imperio español, y gracias al comportamiento por parte de sus pobladores Bolívar le llamó «Villa Heroica».
