The Quillayute River (also spelled Quileute River) is a river situated on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. It empties to the Pacific Ocean at La Push, Washington. The Quillayute River is formed by the confluence of the Bogachiel River, Calawah River and the Sol Duc River.
A RIVER INCISING: In 1955, the Quillayute meandered around a large oxbow that slowed its short path to the Pacific Ocean. By 1990, the oxbow was gone. Today, the Quillayute is again trying to straighten: by cutting toward an old back channel just south of the river mouth.
Today they live mainly on the Quileute and Hoh Indian reservations in Washington. The Quileute make a strong effort to preserve the culture, requiring, for example, that tribal membership be given only to those with 50 percent Quileute ancestry and birth on the Reservation.
In 1882, the dominant society's bent on acculturation reached the Quileute at the village of La Push in the person of teacher A.W. Smith, who set up a school. Among other things, he proceeded to rename Quileutes from American and Scriptural personages, as well as to anglicize Quileute names.
