A white Andalusian city set upon the Mediterranean Sea near Tangier, Tetouan traces its origins back to the 3rd century BCE, when it was a settlement called Tamouda, which existed until 42 CE when it was destroyed by Roman armies. When the Merenid sultan Abu Thabit constructed a kasbah at Tetouan in 1307, the Muslim city began to find its form.
Known as the daughter of "Granada", it’s a city with Hispano-Moorish footmarks. Its medina is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Not far from Tetouan, the seaside resort of "Tamouda Bay" expands on fifteen kilometres of fine sandy bay. Prestigious establishments have settled there, giving a luxury setting to the region.
Tetouan is also home to one of only two modern art museums in Morocco, the other being located in the capital city of Rabat. Housed inside an old station that once provided rail links to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, the museum is an architectural point of interest in its own right.
In 1913, Tétouan became the capital of the Spanish protectorate of Morocco, which was governed by the Khalifa (Moroccan prince serving as Viceroy for the Sultan ), and the Spanish "Alto Comisario" accredited to him. It remained the capital until 1956, when Morocco regained its full independence. Tétouan is a renowned multicultural center.
