  1. Inukjuak, also known as Inujjuaq in Inuktitut or Inukjuaq in Latin script, is a northern village located on Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Innuksuak River in Nunavik, which is part of the Nord-du-Québec region in northern Quebec, Canada. Its population, as of the 2021 Canadian Census, stands at 1,821 people1.

The name Inukjuak translates to "The Giant" in English. However, its original name was Inurjuat, which means "many people". The name has an interesting origin: an Inuk (singular for the word Inuit) went down to the river of Inukjuak to fetch water. While there, they saw many Inuit in kayaks approaching from the mouth of the river. Excitedly, they yelled back to the community, "Inurjuat! Inurjuat!"—and that's how the community got its name1.

Inukjuak has a rich history. Archeological sites in the area indicate that it has been inhabited by the Inuit for a long time. In the early 20th century, the Révillon Frères company established a fur trading post here, originally called Port Harrison. To compete, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) set up its own post in 1920. In 1927, an Anglican mission, a post office, and a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment were established. Over time, the Inuit transitioned from their traditional nomadic lifestyle to permanent settlement in the community. Inukjuak was legally constituted as a municipality in 19801.

Despite being inaccessible by road, Inukjuak can be reached by boat in summer and year-round by air through Inukjuak Airport. The village's police services are provided by the Nunavik Police Service1.

Inukjuak's stunning natural beauty and rich Inuit culture make it a unique and significant place in Canada's northern landscape. 🇨🇦❄️🌊
